Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a reimagining of the venerated original series, taking elements that made those first three games so successful, and combining them with new features and ideas to create a refreshed yet authentic Call of Duty experience. As part of this Modern Warfare re-introduces one of Call of Duty’s most iconic characters, as well as letting you assume the role of several new individuals, ranging from rookie spec-ops soldiers to lifelong resistance fighters.
But who exactly are these people? How have Infinity Ward approached their characterisation for this newer, grittier Modern Warfare? In this article, we’ll explore the old and new faces you see across the course of your Call of Duty campaign.
Captain Price
Captain John Price is the most veteran character in the Call of Duty series, having featured in various guises all the way back to the very first game, launched in 2003. But he is best known for his role as the squad leader and occasional protagonist of the Modern Warfare series. Cool under pressure and unrelenting in his determination, Captain Price’s steadfast leadership is one of the defining aspects of the Modern Warfare series.
For this latest entry in the Modern Warfare franchise, Infinity Ward has produced a careful reimagining of the character. An S.A.S veteran of over ten years, Price has extensive experience on operations all around the globe, including the war-torn country of Urzikstan, where much of Modern Warfare is set. Called in to lead a special task force after a brace of chemical weapons goes missing near the Urzikstan border, Price will do whatever it takes to get the job done.
Kyle Garrick
Kyle Garrick is a Sergeant in the Special Air Service. Born in London, Garrick spent four years in the British Army, before passing selection for the S.A.S in 2018. Since then, Garrick has has performed covert and overt operations around the globe, serving in cross-task-force operations with the Navy SEALs, and disrupting opium supply lines in the middle east, for which he earned the Queens Gallantry Medal and the General Service Medal.
A veteran special-ops agent, Garrick’s specialisations include demolitions, covert surveillance and VIP protection. After political support for tactical operation in the middle-east faltered, Garrick has spent most of his time serving in the SAS domestic counter-terrorism programme, operating alongside the Metropolitan Police in and around London.
Farah Karim
Karim has a strong moral perspective on how the ULF should conduct its operations. In her view, the ULF is exclusively a defensive force, and that under no circumstances should they attack without provocation, even if fighting beyond the Urzikstan border might prove beneficial to her overall goals. She believes fundamentally in fighting with honour, a belief that sometimes strains relationships with her allies and fellow combatants.
“Alex”
Call sign Echo 3-1, known simply as “Alex”, is a CIA operations officer specialising in high-risk covert ops for the organisation’s Special Activities Division. Alex operates in deep cover behind enemy lines, often for months or even years at a time.
Before being recruited by the CIA, Alex served with the U.S. Army’s Delta force. Beyond that, little is known about his background. Similarly, vague are the details of his operations. Once inserted behind enemy lines, he operates almost entirely autonomously, relying on his language skills and cultural knowledge to establish relationships with local militias. Alex is also an expert survival, scavenging weapons, vehicles and equipment wherever he can to help complete his mission.

Currently embedded with the Urzikstan Liberation Force, Alex is assisting with the training of Farah Karim’s forces. Alex’s superiors have noted his capacity for empathy as being crucial in his ability to establish strong alliances. However, the nature of Alex’s work often requires him to perform unsavoury activities prohibited by official military forces, putting him at odds with Karim’s rigid views on honourable warfare.
