All the Dragon Age: The Veilguard romance options and what you should know about them
Time to count your crushes.
If there's one thing everyone likes to plan out for their Dragon Age playthrough—no, not their build—it's who they're going to kiss. There are seven total romance options in Dragon Age: The Veilguard to choose from so you've got plenty of companions to peruse. Characters have always been one of the fan-favorite parts of the Dragon Age series, thanks in no small part to detailed personal quests and really compelling romances. Romanceable companions in the series have inspired no small amount of loyalty and fanaticism in the fandom. If you don't have a Fenris versus Anders feud in your friend group, well, I envy you.
The Veilguard has come armed with lots of favorite archetypes like the suave Antivan assassin and the stalwart Grey Warden. There's also a long-requested dwarven character romance and another Qunari to smooch too. Here's everyone you can date in The Veilguard and what you should know about them.
How does romance work in The Veilguard?
Romancing companions in The Veilguard works pretty similarly to Dragon Age: Inquisition. You'll take on quests relevant to your companions' backstories and, if you want to be more than friends, choose flirtatious dialogue lines when given the opportunity. You can also use our Veilguard gift guide to figure out what presents you can use to boost your bond with them.
This time (as in Dragon Age 2) all seven of your companions are pansexual and are open to a relationship with Rook regardless of race or gender. Importantly, those you don't choose to have a relationship with might wind up dating each other—like how Dorian and The Iron Bull had an alluded-to relationship in Inquisition if neither were with the Inquisitor.
As is the usual for Dragon Age, romance with different companions will involve sex scenes later in the game as things get more serious.
Bellara
Bellara Lutare
- Class: Mage
- Faction: Veil Jumpers
- Written by: John Epler
- Voice: Jee Young Han
Get the full diagnostic on cozying up to a mage in our Bellara romance guide.
Bellara is an elf and member of the Veil Jumpers who explore ancient elven ruins. She's upbeat and cheerful and extremely knowledgeable about ancient elven tech. She's a bit awkward too, with that quirky style of dialogue that upbeat engineer-like women characters often have.
Her relationship with Rook is a sweet one. She opens up about her insecurities pretty early on, enlisting Rook's help with fixing some decisions from her past that she believes were mistakes. She also often shares her fears and concerns about the elven gods that the team is fighting and how all that history, which she previously felt so connected to, may reflect poorly on elves.
Bellara does have some of the more unexpected developments late in the game. She takes up some new hobbies that are just for fun, for instance, but also some choices in the endgame that can really add layers to her story.
Davrin
Davrin
- Class: Warrior
- Faction: Grey Wardens
- Written by: John Dombrow
- Voice: Ike Amadi
For a full plan to snag a Warden, see our Davrin romance guide.
Davrin is an elf who was raised in a Dalish clan and later left to pursue a more adventurous life that led him to joining the Grey Wardens. He's become the sole protector of a griffon cub named Assan and most of his personal journey revolves around learning the patience and trust that it takes to raise his new companion.
Davrin's romance is on the steamier side. He isn't at all like the bashful Grey Warden characters that we've been able to romance in past games and isn't afraid of telling Rook that he's interested in them. That confidence makes for some great dates and private chats back at The Lighthouse as you get to know him and express interest in the "thrill of the chase."
Davrin's voice actor Ike Amadi really steals the show among Rook's companions, in my opinion. Davrin's full range of emotion is always on display and Amadi really manages to sell him as a fully fleshed out person with frustration and flirtation both in their due time.
Emmrich
Emmrich Volkarin
- Class: Mage (Necromancer)
- Faction: Mourn Watch
- Written by: Sylvia Feketekuty
- Voice: Nick Boraine
Emmrich is a human necromancer and a member of the Mourn Watch, one of the guardians of the Grand Necropolis in Nevarra. He's also got a skeleton familiar called Manfred. Emmrich has a very professorial air about him: he's gentlemanly, inquisitive, and loves to give an impromptu magic lecture.
I've not seen Emmrich's romance myself yet, but at one point BioWare described him as "more intimate and sensual." His relationship with Rook overall is one built on respect and curiosity as he shares some of his fears with you and Rook.
By the end of his personal story, you get to help Emmrich make a pretty big choice about his priorities and legacy as a necromancer. Depending on how you choose, it can feel way more acknowledged by the rest of the team than some other personal quest endings.
Harding
Lace Harding
- Class: Rogue
- Faction: Formerly the Inquisition
- Written by: Sheryl Chee
- Voice: Ali Hillis
Set a route to the center of a scout's heart in our Harding romance guide.
Lace Harding, formerly Scout Harding of the Inquisition, is a dwarf and a rogue with a slightly dry sense of humor but a positive outlook and a lot of empathy. She definitely has the most established background and personality prior to The Veilguard.
Harding grew up in The Hinterlands, the first major explorable area of Dragon Age: Inquisition, and joined up with the movement as a scout. She didn't actually have that much screen time in Inquisition but she made a big impression on fans by always turning up to introduce the Inquisitor to a new explorable area with a kind word.
Her personal journey in The Veilguard is a lot grander as she reconnects with dwarven history and discovers how it relates to the current elven god plot. She has some nice conversations with Rook and other members of the team that really make it feel like you're getting to know Harding and helping her feel confident asserting her opinions.
If you don't wind up dating Harding, she can end up with Taash instead.
Lucanis
Lucanis Dellamorte
- Class: Rogue
- Faction: Antivan Crows
- Written by: Mary Kirby
- Voice: Zach Mendez
Disclaimer
Lucanis' romance seems to be the easiest to screw up. I won't stick the spoilers here, but if you have any doubts about your early game decisions, check out my Lucanis romance guide to make sure you stay on track to snag the assassin.
Lucanis is a human rogue and a member of the Antivan Crows assassin guild. Not just any Crow, either; he's the grandson of current leader Caterina Dellamorte. Lucanis has been presumed dead for a year and the first thing you find out about him is that you need to go jailbreak him from a magical prison.
Lucanis isn't nearly as standoffish as his sour expression would have you assume. He's a bit of a romantic, actually, full of pretty words and sweet gestures as you get to know him. If you're a sucker for a romance with a guy who tries to keep you out of the mess of his life but ultimately falls hard, this is your man. Be warned though, Lucanis is the king of unresolved sexual tension. He will have you on the edge of your seat for a very long time despite absolutely being interested in Rook.
If you don't wind up dating Lucanis yourself, he'll express interest in Neve, which you can assist him with or discourage.
Neve
Neve Gallus
- Class: Mage (Ice)
- Faction: Shadow Dragons
- Written by: Brianne Battye
- Voice: Jessica Clark
Get a full briefing on how to tail the detective in our Neve romance guide.
Neve is a human mage, a private investigator, and a member of the underground Shadow Dragon faction in Tevinter. Neve is driven by her desire to find justice for those in Tevinter oppressed by the Magisters and she's got a contentious relationship with the Templars and organized crime groups of the city.
Neve is wry and witty and although she appreciates Rook's help in Dock Town, she's no stranger to going it alone. Neve is dedicated to the team's cause but when it comes to pursuing a romance with her, she's slow to trust. This is a romance for those who want something more grounded and subdued and layered with longing.
If you don't pursue a relationship with Neve yourself, it's possible for her to wind up with Lucanis.
Taash
Taash
- Class: Warrior
- Faction: Lords of Fortune
- Written by: Trick Weekes
- Voice: Jin Maley
Get prepared to survive the heat with a dragon hunter in our Taash romance guide.
Taash is a qunari warrior and member of the Lords of Fortune, a guild of treasure hunters based out of Rivain. That explains all the gold jewelry and the emerald horn. Taash's specialty is hunting dragons, which obviously comes in handy on this quest against the gods and their massive dragons.
Among your companions, Taash has by far the most dry and blunt delivery, which I enjoyed a lot. It's a real breath of fresh air compared to more talkative members of the team like Bellara and Emmrich. Taash does come off as on the younger side among the team with a story that focuses on parental relationships, identity, and culture.
If you don't pursue a relationship, Taash will express interest in Harding instead.
